Random thoughts, part I

Now I see clearly how car ownership encourages mindless consumption. It’s so easy to hop in the car and head out to the mall or wherever to buy stuff, but when I have to think about how to get there, and the effort involved, I find myself wondering if this is really something I need right now. And usually it isn’t.

I agree. I've been car-less most of this decade, triggered by auto theft, and I couldn't ignore how easy it would really be to commute eight miles to work in this town, compared to Los Angeles, where I had toiled for 30 years.

It's been SO economical and practical, that when coupled with a very frugal lifestyle, I now only work when I want to, and take 6-12 month breaks from work without a sweat.

Now that's a future I can look forward to! I heartily endorse the philosophy of working less and enjoying life more.
